Trish Monture (1958–2010)

Dr. Patricia “Trish” Monture-Angus (1958–2010) was an accomplished scholar, lawyer, writer, mother, activist, and highly respected faculty member in the College of Arts and Science. In November 2014, the Aboriginal Student Achievement and Transition Program Office was renamed in honour of her profound contributions. Programming coordinated through the Trish Monture Centre includes academic initiatives, student cohort programs, and holistic academic advising that honours the diversity of learning experiences students bring to our campus community.

TMC Academic Initiatives

Academic initiatives coordinated through the Trish Monture Centre provide a strong start to 60+ degree programs in the College of Arts and Science, and beyond. With an explicit focus on building academic skills and confidence, TMC courses aim to meet students at point of potential (vs. preparation) and celebrate the knowledge traditions of our Treaty spaces with culturally-responsive instruction, tutorial groups, and developmental academic coaching grounded in a lifelong learning framework.

Students registering through Indigenous Student Achievement Pathways (ISAP) and University of Saskatchewan Transition Entrance Program (USTEP), and students who have completed fewer than 60 credit units (academic years 1 and 2) have priority registration in TMC Academic Initiatives.

TMC Cohort Programs

Facilitated by A & S staff, TMC Cohort students meet once per month to discuss shared points of experience and topics of interest. Connect to resources and build a community of support for your learning journey!

  • A & S Research Explorers – We invite undergraduate students with an interest in research and/or graduate studies to create a network of support and develop their research skills. Students meet on a regular basis to participate in workshops, connect with campus resources, share stories, and build a competitive research portfolio that can be used for applications to graduate school, scholarships, and future employment opportunities!

Learn more and request to register by emailing tmc.info@usask.ca with "Research Explorers” in the subject line; capacity 30 students per academic year.

  • A & S Leaders Today – This programming is designed to deepen mentorship skills, foster community, and cultivate leadership among current student leaders, including peer mentors engaged with FLEX, USTEP and ISAP Learning Communities. Through workshops, discussion, and reflective practice, participants strengthen their ability to support peers and navigate the campus environments. The cohort empowers mentors to grow as confident, empathetic leaders both within and beyond their campus communities.

Registration is by peer mentor coordinator and/or academic advisor recommendation. Email tmc.info@usask.ca or evan.potts@usask.ca to learn more.

  • A & S Student Parents – Are you a student parent who would appreciate opportunities to connect and share tips and strategies with other student parents? This is the group for you. We’ll meet once a month, with remote participation options, to discuss shared topics of interest throughout the academic year. Once per term, you and your children will be invited to participate in an A & S Families event hosted by campus youth programmers (e.g. Museum of Natural Sciences, Diefenbaker Canada Centre, Huskies Athletics, other).

TMC Academic Advising

TMC Academic Advisors work from a position of "learning together" with students in ISAP and USTEP First Year Learning Communities, and with students in general undergraduate programs who have experienced nontraditional pathways to post-secondary education.

Our goal is to help students to find a sense of balance and momentum during their time as a student, allowing them to prioritize academics while growing as whole and healthy individuals. We offer students a spirit of friendship and respect as we walk with them through their studies and lifelong learning journey.

We support student preparation and participation in curricular and extended learning opportunities, provide coaching on time management and financial advocacy, and meet student inquiries through a personalized lens.

TMC Academic Advisors for Indigenous Students work fluidly with the Undergraduate Student Advising Office (in Arts 265) to greet students’ mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual selves with expertise specific to their student experience.
