Research

Robert Calder has published on Elizabeth Bowen, Arthur Morrison, P.G. Wodehouse, George Orwell, D.H. Lawrence, Vincent Brome, H.G. Wells, Vera Brittain, and Anthony Curtis. Of his two books on W. Somerset Maugham, W. Somerset Maugham and the Quest For Freedom (William Heinemann, 1972) has been published in Japanese translation, and Willie: The Life of W. Somerset Maugham (Heinemann, 1989) won the Governor General’s Literary Award for Non-Fiction and has been published in Russian translation. Professor Calder has taught courses in twentieth-century British fiction and drama, and in recent years he has focussed on wartime literature, primarily twentieth-century British but also Canadian.
