Jill Blakley named College of Arts and Science interim vice-dean faculty relations

Department of Geography and Planning faculty member Dr. Jill Blakley (PhD) has been appointed interim vice-dean faculty relations in the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Arts and Science from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2022.

The vice-dean faculty relations is a key member of the college’s leadership team and is the liaison between Arts and Science faculty, the vice-provost faculty relations and the University of Saskatchewan Faculty Association.

Blakley takes over the faculty relations portfolio from Dr. Valerie J. Korinek (PhD), who has served as vice-dean faculty relations for the college since 2018. Korinek will return to her role as a professor in the Department of History.

Blakley joined the College of Arts and Science’s Department of Geography and Planning in 2009 as an assistant professor and received tenure and a promotion to associate professor in 2015. She is an associate faculty member of the School of Environment and Sustainability, a full member of the Canadian Institute of Planners and a registered professional planner with the Saskatchewan Professional Planners Institute. She is also a certified leadership coach through the International Coaching Federation.

Previously, Blakley served as interim vice-dean academic for the College of Arts and Science, as well as chair of Faculty Council and chair of the interdisciplinary Regional and Urban Planning Program. She also brings extensive committee experience at the departmental, college and university levels.

In her research, Blakley specializes in cumulative effects assessment in the context of regional natural resource development programs. She is lead editor of a newly published volume, Handbook of Cumulative Effects Assessment, which features the research of more than 40 international cumulative effects practitioners and scholars.

Blakley has provided expert advice to organizations including the International Association of Impact Assessment, the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment, the Canadian International Development Agency, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Parks Canada, Alberta Environment, the Manitoba Clean Environment Commission, and the File Hills Qu’Appelle Tribal Council in Saskatchewan.
