New podcast shares real student stories about studying abroad

The ‘Beyond Borders’ podcast interviews USask Arts and Science students about their experiences, answers questions about studying abroad

Have you ever thought about travelling while in university? Considering studying abroad but not sure where to start?

The Study Abroad Office in the USask College of Arts and Science recently launched the Beyond Borders podcast on Spotify.

The podcast features Arts and Science students who have travelled and taken courses in another country through the Study Abroad program.

Study abroad coordinator Kathryn Sawatzky (BA’24), who has experienced the program firsthand, said that starting a podcast was a way for students to learn more details about what it’s actually like to study abroad.

“Students can hear real stories about what other students have experienced and will hopefully be able to picture themselves studying abroad,” she said.

The stories and experiences students have from studying abroad are valuable, Sawatzky said.

“We wanted (their stories) on an accessible platform, and podcasts are a great way to do that,” she added. “Students can listen while taking a walk around campus, or on the bus ride home.”

The first episode of Beyond Borders is now available. The episode features two recent International Studies graduates, Brianne Leinenweber and Zachary Digout about their internship experiences in Washington, D.C. at the Washington Centre.

Ten episodes will be released throughout the 2024/25 academic year.

“I hope that listeners of the podcast will take away a few different things,” Sawatzky said. “I want students to be able to see that everyone can go abroad, and to get excited by the possibilities.”

“I want people to be able to see that travel study has a profound impact on students that transcends the journey itself—it follows the students well past their time at USask.”
